Dear Attorney General,
Bernardo Caal Xol, 48, is a defender of the indigenous Mayan Q’eqchi’ people. He has been unfairly imprisoned for over 2 years for defending the rights of Mayan Q’eqchi communities affected by the construction of a hydroelectric project on the sacred Cahabón River in the department of Alta Verapaz, in northern Guatemala.
Please carry out an internal review of Bernardo Caal’s case file immediately. Due to the fact that there is no evidence against him, take steps to ensure Bernardo Caal is released and all charges against him are dropped so that he is immediately released from prison. Carry out a full, prompt and impartial investigation into the case made against Bernardo Caal and ensure those responsible for furthering the baseless accusations against him are held to account.
